about

A mosaic of sound in sustained time
In contrast to my previous album "Lydlandskaber" from 2017, which consisted exclusively of one-takes, with "Mosaik" I have moved in a new direction: I have combined many layers of old and new recordings – analog (home-made) synthesizers, field recordings, my own vocal and sound generated using digital algorithms. It is a mosaic in sustained time, i.e. each "stone" in the mosaic is relatively big and its movement is in most cases very fluid – one sound fades in, out, over and under the other sounds without necessarily jumping in the ears.
On the B-side of the record, which consists of four smaller compositions that merge into one long journey of sound, I have tried to create transitions that give you the feeling of suddenly being in a new place, without having discovered how you got there. In this process, I have been particularly inspired by Eliane Radigue's work "Trilogie de la Mort", which leaves exactly this feeling on the undersigned.

Somewhere between aleatorism, improvisation and tight compositional choices is “Mosaik”. A patchwork of sounds produced on home-built machines, home-knitted software and prepared acoustic instruments. A recurring theme is the idea that electronic music is largely the machines that it is produced on; without the machines no sound.
I am inspired by the meeting between machine and human and want to listen to what the machines have to say. The same analogy can be drawn to our digital tools – they ultimately dictate, what options are available to us as composers and how we should work with and relate to sound – therefore it has become important for me to make my own programs as well as to control existing programs in new ways. This opens up new possibilities, new insights and not least new results. The creation of the instrument becomes a central part of the compositional process. The following two works each represent a different end of the scale that “Mosaik” constitutes. On the one hand, "Prepared for Spring" is a work that originates from an improvisation on a prepared guitar and a tape echo where “Poly_blip” represents the opposite end of the scale; a work that has come about through several stages of reinterpretation of my own productions: Sounds synthesized on my home-built analogue machines, recorded, cut into pieces and put back together algorithmically and finally with a new layer of improvisation on top.

My primary instrument is a home-built analogue modular synthesizer inspired by similar machines from the 1970s. In addition, I work with prepared instruments, tape loops and homemade software.
